We gathered at Shawna's home for our next book club pick: Jewel, by Bret Lott. We had voted on some possible titles and this one was one of our top picks. It is a book about raising a child with Down Syndrome during the 1950s. Our Southern-inspired meal included: fried chicken, mashed potatoes, spoonbread, homemade biscuits, garden salad, baked beans, Mississippi Mud Pie, and Honey Bun Cake.
It was such an enjoyable evening as we discussed what it'd be like to have a child with Down Syndrome, how much mothers would sacrifice for their children, family dynamics when there are special needs within the family, about the author being male, about the effects of a person's socio-economic status, etc.
